Church Insurance in Minnesota
Minnesota winters are hard on church buildings, with heavy snow, ice dams and deep freezes, and summer storms bring hail and straight-line winds across the state. Congregations from the Twin Cities to Duluth and Rochester also run youth programs, camps and sports leagues, which shape their liability needs.
Minnesota Church Insurance Essentials
- Property insurance for buildings, steeples, boilers and contents.
- General liability for worship, athletics and facility rentals.
- Abuse and molestation coverage for kids and youth.
- D&O insurance for church councils and employment decisions.
- Church auto coverage for winter driving and trips.

Minnesota Winter and Hail Exposures
Ice dams can push water under shingles and into ceilings, and heavy snow can stress flat roofs over fellowship halls and gyms. Frozen pipes are a leading cause of large water damage claims when buildings sit empty midweek. In summer, hail is common across southern and western Minnesota, so check your wind and hail deductible and roof settlement terms.
Minnesota Workers’ Compensation for Churches
Minnesota generally requires employers with one or more employees, including part-time staff, to carry workers’ compensation, and the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry oversees the system. This is general information, not legal advice.
Minnesota Nonprofit Law: Director Protection With a Personal Injury Exception
Under Minn. Stat. § 317A.257, uncompensated directors, officers and trustees of Minnesota nonprofits are generally not personally liable for good-faith acts within their duties. The statute does not limit liability for physical injury or death they personally and directly cause, and it does not apply to willful or reckless misconduct.
Minnesota also has a separate statute for volunteer athletic coaches and officials, Minn. Stat. § 604A.11. Neither law protects the church as an organization, which can still be sued for negligence. Liability, abuse and D&O coverage carry that risk. Learn more on our nonprofit insurance page. This is general information, not legal advice.
