How Much Does Church Insurance Cost?
There’s no single price for church insurance. A small congregation renting space might pay a few hundred dollars a year for liability coverage, while a church that owns several buildings, runs a school and operates vans can pay tens of thousands. What you pay depends on what you own, what you do, and where you are.
Typical Starting Premiums by Coverage
These are median annual premiums for churches and religious organizations that requested quotes through Insureon, an online insurance marketplace. They describe smaller organizations; larger churches with significant property will pay more.
| Coverage | Median annual premium |
|---|---|
| General liability ($1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate) | $500 |
| Business owner’s policy (liability + property) | $1,193 |
| Professional liability | $674 |
| Workers’ compensation | $724 |
| Commercial auto | $1,696 |
| Directors and officers (D&O) | $854 |
What Drives the Cost
- Property value and construction. Buildings are priced on what it would cost to rebuild them, so age, size, roof condition and construction type matter most. Older buildings and those with stained glass or historic features cost more to insure.
- Location. Exposure to hurricanes, hail, wildfire and flooding raises property rates, and some carriers have stopped writing property coverage in high-risk areas.
- Programs and activities. Daycare, schools, youth programs, mission trips, counseling and facility rentals each add liability exposure.
- People. The number of employees drives workers’ comp; the size of the board drives D&O; the drivers and vehicles drive auto.
- Claims history. Prior claims, especially property and abuse claims, raise premiums and can limit which carriers will quote.
- Limits and deductibles. Higher limits cost more; higher deductibles cost less.
Why Church Insurance Costs More Than It Used To
Church premiums have risen sharply since 2023. Severe storms, wildfires and higher rebuilding costs have pushed up property claims, and the largest church insurers have tightened underwriting and dropped churches they consider high risk. Some congregations have seen renewals rise several-fold: one Texas church’s premium went from $23,000 to $80,000 a year after its carrier dropped it.
How to Keep Your Premium Down
- Keep your building values current so you aren’t over- or under-insured.
- Document maintenance, especially roofs, electrical and plumbing.
- Put written safety, background-check and child-protection policies in place.
- Raise your property deductible if your budget can absorb it.
- Compare quotes from more than one carrier. An independent broker can do that for you.
