Church Umbrella Insurance

Church umbrella insurance gives your church extra liability protection above the limits of your primary policies. If a serious accident, injury, or lawsuit costs more than your general liability or auto policy will pay, the umbrella picks up the difference, up to its own limit. Integrity Now Insurance Brokers is an independent agency that places church umbrella and excess liability insurance for congregations of every size in all 50 states.

What Is Church Umbrella Insurance?

An umbrella is a policy designed to protect against catastrophic liability losses (see the IRMI definition of an umbrella liability policy). It does not replace your other policies. It sits on top of them. Your general liability insurance for churches pays first. When a covered claim uses up that limit, the umbrella pays the rest.

For example, if a church van accident leads to a $2.5 million judgment and your auto liability limit is $1 million, a $2 million umbrella could pay the remaining $1.5 million. Without it, the church would owe that amount itself.

What Does a Church Umbrella Policy Sit Over?

Most church umbrella and excess liability policies extend these underlying coverages:

Some carriers can also schedule these lines under the umbrella, but many exclude them or limit them:

Which underlying policies an umbrella covers varies by carrier. Before you choose a limit, ask for the schedule of underlying policies and every exclusion.

Umbrella vs. Excess Liability Insurance for Churches

People often use the two terms interchangeably, but the policy forms can work differently.

Because wording varies, we compare the actual forms side by side rather than relying on the label.

Which Churches Need Umbrella Insurance?

Any church can face a claim larger than its primary limits. Umbrella coverage is especially worth considering if your church:

Umbrella Insurance for Large and Multi-Campus Churches

Larger congregations have more people on site, more vehicles, more events, and more exposure to large verdicts. A large church insurance program usually combines blanket property limits, standalone abuse and molestation, D&O, and EPLI limits, and an umbrella over the whole program. For these churches, it matters which underlying lines the umbrella actually covers. An umbrella that excludes abuse and molestation or EPLI leaves the church relying only on those standalone limits.

Large churches may also need more than one layer: a primary umbrella followed by one or more excess policies, sometimes from different carriers. We help structure the tower so the limits and terms line up.

What Church Umbrella Insurance Does Not Cover

  • Your own property: damage to your buildings and contents is covered by church property insurance.
  • Workers’ compensation benefits: the umbrella can extend employer’s liability, but it does not pay statutory workers’ comp benefits.
  • Excluded lines: often abuse and molestation, D&O, EPLI, professional liability, cyber, and pollution unless specifically scheduled.
  • Intentional or criminal acts and contractual obligations outside the policy terms.

How Much Umbrella Coverage Does a Church Need?

There is no single right number. Many churches buy limits in $1 million increments, and the right amount depends on your risk. When we help you choose a limit, we look at:

  • Weekly attendance and the number of campuses
  • Number of vehicles, how often they are used, and who drives them
  • Schools, daycares, camps, sports, and youth programs
  • The size and type of events you host
  • Limits required by lenders, landlords, denominations, and facility-use contracts
  • Your claims history and the legal climate in your state

What Affects the Cost of Church Umbrella Insurance?

Umbrella pricing depends on the limits and quality of your underlying policies, the umbrella limit you choose, attendance, vehicles, programs such as schools or daycares, your state, and your claims history. The first $1 million of umbrella limit is usually the most expensive layer, and each additional million typically costs less. Carriers also require minimum limits on the underlying policies, so the cost of the whole program matters, not just the umbrella line.

Because every carrier prices these factors differently, comparing several church insurance quotes is the most reliable way to find the right limit at a fair price.

A direct carrier can only offer its own umbrella form. As an independent broker, we represent your church, not an insurance company. We check which underlying policies each umbrella covers, flag exclusions such as abuse and molestation, make sure your underlying limits meet the umbrella’s requirements, and compare options side by side. Church Umbrella Insurance FAQs

What is church umbrella insurance?

Church umbrella insurance is a liability policy that adds extra limits above your church’s primary liability policies, most often general liability, commercial auto liability, and employer’s liability. When a covered claim exhausts the limit of an underlying policy, the umbrella pays the rest, up to its own limit.

What is the difference between umbrella and excess liability insurance for churches?

An excess liability policy usually follows the terms of one or more underlying policies and only adds limit. An umbrella can also sit over several policies at once and, depending on the form, may cover some claims the underlying policies do not, after a self-insured retention. Wording varies by carrier, so compare the actual forms.

How much umbrella coverage does a church need?

There is no single right number. Many churches buy limits in $1 million increments. The right limit depends on attendance, how many vehicles you run and who drives them, whether you operate a school, daycare, or camp, the events you host, and any limits required by lenders, landlords, or facility-use contracts. Large and multi-campus churches typically need higher limits.

Does a church umbrella policy cover abuse and molestation claims?

Often not. Many umbrella policies exclude abuse and molestation, or only cover it when the underlying abuse policy is scheduled and meets the umbrella’s minimum limits. Ask for the list of scheduled underlying policies and any exclusions before you buy.

Does an umbrella policy cover church vans and buses?

An umbrella usually sits over your commercial auto liability policy, so it can add limits for serious accidents involving church-owned vans and buses. Some carriers restrict or exclude 15-passenger vans or require driver standards, so confirm how your vehicles are treated.

Does church umbrella insurance cover property damage to our building?

No. An umbrella is liability coverage. It responds when your church is legally responsible for injury or damage to others. Damage to your own buildings and contents is covered by church property insurance.

How much does church umbrella insurance cost?

Cost depends on your underlying policies, the limit you choose, attendance, vehicles, programs such as schools or daycares, your state, and your claims history. The first $1 million of umbrella limit usually costs more than each additional million. We compare carriers to find the right limit at a fair price.

Do we need to carry certain limits on our other policies to buy an umbrella?

Yes. Umbrella carriers usually require minimum limits on the underlying general liability, auto liability, and employer’s liability policies, and sometimes on abuse, D&O, or EPLI. If an underlying limit is lower than required, your church could have a gap it must pay itself.

Do you charge a broker fee for church umbrella insurance?

No. Integrity Now Insurance Brokers is paid by the carrier commission built into the premium. Your quote shows any taxes or fees required by the carrier or your state.
