Church Insurance in Nevada

Nevada churches range from large Las Vegas and Henderson congregations to Reno, Carson City and small rural churches. Nevada is one of the most seismically active states, northern Nevada faces wildfire, and southern Nevada’s heat is tough on roofs and air conditioning. Fast-growing ministries also bring more people, programs and vehicles to insure.

Nevada Church Coverage Options

Nevada Earthquake, Wildfire and Heat Risks

Earthquake is excluded from standard church property policies, and Nevada has many active faults, especially around Reno and in the western part of the state. Read our guide to earthquake insurance for churches. Wildfire affects churches in the Sierra foothills and Reno-Tahoe area, and carriers may ask about defensible space. In Las Vegas, extreme heat shortens the life of roofs and HVAC systems, and monsoon storms can bring flash flooding, which is excluded unless you buy flood coverage.

Nevada Workers’ Compensation for Churches

Nevada generally requires employers with one or more employees to carry workers’ compensation, and the Division of Industrial Relations within the Department of Business and Industry oversees the system. This is general information, not legal advice.

Nevada Nonprofit Law: NRS 41.480 and 41.485

Nevada handles nonprofit liability in two pieces. NRS 41.480 states that a nonprofit organization is not immune from liability for injuries caused by its own negligence or that of its agents and employees, while generally protecting officers, directors and trustees from personal liability unless they engage in intentional misconduct, fraud or a knowing violation of the law. NRS 41.485 protects volunteers of charitable organizations for non-supervisory services, unless the act is intentional, willful, wanton or malicious, and it keeps the organization liable for its volunteers’ acts.

Because Nevada law makes clear the church is not immune, liability, abuse and D&O coverage are essential. More on our nonprofit insurance page. This is general information, not legal advice.
